Introduction:

Mt. Makalu & Sherpani Col Traverse, a great combination of adventure which leads you to cross both Sherpani or West Col of Makalu towards Hongu valley with high and scenic traverse over Amphu Labtsa Pass 5,780 m to reach high Khumbu valley within Everest region.

Mt. Makalu & Sherpani Col Traverse, where this high journey lead you to extreme adventure beyond beautiful Arun and Barun valley and in between Baruntse peaks and great wall of Mt. Makalu West Col towards Imjatse valley.

An adventure for tough and veteran trekkers and climbers, where beginners have to train hard for few months before joining in awesome trips which leads to some mountaineering climbing experience over snow-rocks-moraine and ice sections during great crossing and traversing one of the highest Passes in Himalaya.

Starting with sweeping and scenic flight from Kathmandu to land at warm semi-tropical areas of Arun Valley at Tumlingtar town, the gateway town to various trekking adventure around Nepal Mid and Far Eastern Himalaya, from here our adventure begins taking an exciting drive on dirt road to high hills of Makalu.

From the hills of Num village where drive ends to commence our walks facing amazing views of Mt. Makalu and Everest in the distance over rolling green hills.

Soon walk leads with ups and down trail past several remote and isolated villages of Seduwa and Tashi-Gaon, from here into complete wilderness away from human habitation and villages.

As climb leads into lovely clouded forested areas of tall rhododendron-pines-oaks-magnolia and fir tree lines to reach at Khoma-la pas with incredible views of Makalu-Baruntse-Chamling and Kanchenjunga towards east.

Trek leads past icy lakes and over smaller pass of Shipton-la to reach within scenic Barun valley and then walking towards west of the valley to reach remorseless fields of ice and glaciers at Makalu base camp.

From Makalu base camp our real adventure begins climbing high towards Sherpani pass or Makalu West Col to reach at another small scenic valley at Hongu in Panch Pokhari (five smaller ponds).

After a nice rest then heading towards our last and highest pass of the adventure over Amphu-Labtsa pass to reach within Everest and Khumbu areas at Imjatse valley near famous and popular Island peak.

One of the toughest and great adventures around Himalaya ends walking towards Namche Bazaar and to Lukla town for another scenic flight back to Kathmandu after a great overwhelming adventure on Mt. Makalu & Sherpani Col Traverse.

Day 22:            Fly back to Kathmandu and transfer to respective hotels.
Day 23:            In Kathmandu rest and spare days for individual activities
Day 24:            International departure for home ward bound.

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu and transfer to hotels.
On arrival at Kathmandu international airport, where you will be received with warm welcome and then transfer to your hotels in the hub of Kathmandu city, after checking in getting refreshed rendezvous with other climbing members and staff.

Here our guide or group leader will brief you with information regarding trekking on
Mt. Makalu & Sherpani Col Traverse, with welcome dinner in a nice Nepalese Restaurants includes Folk program of various parts of Nepal.

Day 02: In Kathmandu optional tour and preparation for Makalu Treks and Traverse.

A day in Kathmandu for full preparations and packing as well to purchase necessary equipments, on this day where one can take an optional tour at places of interest around Kathmandu-Patan and Bhaktapur cities, where you will soak within culture and historical sites listed as World Heritage Sites.

Day 03: Fly to Tumlingtar 448 m a scenic flight of 45 mins.
Morning transfer to Kathmandu domestic airport for sweeping 45 minutes scenic flight to reach east of Nepal within Arun River valley.

On reaching at Tumlingtar airport with exciting panorama of mountains with Everest and Makalu in view during airborne, here our trekking and field staff will receives you and then transfer to local lodge, with time to explore this small and interesting town of Tumlingtar.

Day 04: Drive to Num 1,490 m – 04 hrs with afternoon free to explore.
From Tumlingtar morning starts with exciting drive towards mid hills past many farm villages and large town of Khandbari, journey continues on hilly ridge with rough dirt tracks leading higher at Chinchela village.

 

From here descend to Num, a nice village on a ridge where at present slowly turning into a town as motorable road reached into this village just few years back, at Num overnight in lodge or in tents with grand views of surrounding landscapes and peaks of Jalajala Himal and Makalu.

 

Day 05: Trek to Seduwa 1,540 m- 05 hrs.

Today starting our first day walk of the adventure with steep descend to Arun River, and then crossing over bridge, then climb up to Seduwa village past farm fields and small villages of Runmura.

At Runmura with lunch break and then climb gets gradual reaching our overnight halt at Seduwa village, a small settlement with primary school and a health post overlooking views of Num over a ridge with adjoining hills of Bhojpur and Jalajala rocky peaks.

Day 06: Trek to Tashi Gaon 2,135m – 04 hours.
Morning from Seduwa village, walk on undulating and winding path to Tashi Gaon a Sherpa village, and also a last village and settlement on route Makalu base camp, walk leads past farm areas within neat terraces fields of millets and paddy a major crops of the region.

Walk leads for four hour on a nice pleasant trail, and then reaching at Tashi Gaon for lunch and overnight camp, free afternoon to explore this small Sherpa village of great interest.

Day 07: Trek to Kongma Danda 3,556 m – 05 hours
Leaving Tashi Gaon the last village for a week long, morning walk leads on gentle path into thick forest of rhododendron, oaks and tall pines trees passing many cattle herder’s temporary shelters of shades and stone huts after few hours of pleasant walk stopping for lunch on the grassy meadow and summer pasture ground.

Afternoon walk with steep climb for few hours to reach on top Kongma ridge top, as tall trees gives away for smaller rhododendron and juniper bushes with few birch trees.

This high ridge offers excellent views of Kanchenjunga mountain range and of Mt. Makalu with adjoining peaks, from here in complete wilderness.

Day 08: Trek to Mumbuk 3,553 m – 06 hours
From Kongma Danda morning walk on a ridge line following a gradual path with few ups and down reaching at icy ponds of Thulo Pokhari (big) with Sano Pokhari (small) after crossing Tutu-la and Shipton la at above 4, 453 meters passes, and then downhill back into forest with views of Khumbakarna Himal range of mountains towards north, overnight camp on a level ground in the middle of tall trees.

Day 09: Trek to Nghe (Nehe Kharka 3,760 m – 05 hours.
Walk this morning takes you at beautiful and scenic Barun valley famous for rare species of vegetation- plants and herbs including wild-life.

Starting our walk with down-hill for an hour and then crossing a small stream to reach into Barun valley, with gentle ups facing views of peaks on both side of the valley.

Walk leads past few Sheppard’s shelters and a small Buddhist Gompa (monastery), after a pleasant walk of 5 hours reaching at Nehe Kharka for overnight camp within Barun valley.

Day 10: Trek to Shersong 4, 572 m – 05 hours.
From Barun valley walk to Shersong leads you at end of the valley close at Makalu base camp walking on slow uphill and crossing streams facing grand views of Mt. Makalu and Baruntse peaks.

After a nice scenic trek of five hours reaching our final destination at Shersong for overnight stops, a mere distance from Makalu base camp.

Day 11: Trek to Makalu Base Camp 4,812 m – 03 hrs.
Morning start walk toward Mt. Makalu base camp with views of Baruntse peak and IV peak include views of Mt. Everest with Rare Eastern Face known as Kangshung with Mt. Lhotse, walk leads within moraine and ice close to Baruntse Pokhari (pond).

On reaching base camp of world 5th highest Mt. Makalu, towers high above 8,463 m and 27, 766 ft, one of the toughest mountains to tackle with technical climb.

Afternoon free for short hike above the camp, a climb on the moraine ridge, for more spectacular views of Mt. Makalu with hidden east sides of Lhotse and Everest, which looms above Barun glacier towards North West.

Day 12: Trek to High Camp at 5,200 m – 04 hrs.
After a nice rest, climb leads westwards beneath the towering Makalu Western Pillar, from this point taking cautiously with the altitude gain on this high area, trek and climb follows to an valley ablation to the west side of glacier from Barun peak, then trekking into a small valley through glacier to make our own trail over the boulder of rocks and ice with strewn ice caves and then setting up the camp, this spot is also called Puja Camp below towering Mt. Makalu’s West Pillar.

Day 13: Climb to Camp at 5,700 m – 04 hrs.
From here after a good rest, leaving the Puja camp follows a steady hard climb to a rocky ridge line to Barun peak west end, and then a climb to a row of cairns reaching at Sherpani Col a glacial valley for overnight camp and lunch, afternoon preparation for next day crossing of ultimate Sherpani Col pass.

Day 14: Camp on the Moraine 5,640m after crossing Sherpani Pass.
Today final assault and a big day, starting the journey before dawn heading with flashlights / torch lights,, making our own path to the Sherpani glacier icy snout to reach three individual Col’s providing entrée to the cirque, then choosing the most suitable and reachable routes, climb follows on steep snow covered slope, with fixed ropes back-up, where our expert guide have fixed on the previous afternoon time, from this Col or pass all rope up to get cross the glacier on the rocky ridge of  Sherpani West Col. This striking cirque is covered by icy ridges to the north of Baruntse’s glaciers, offering views of Makalu, the wall of Chamlang to the south and majestic towering peak of Ama Dablam in the west direction.

After a hard day of arduous climb descending from the Col on fixed rope lines towards Hongu Glacier, and completing this long day with a good walk over snow slopes beneath the moraines near at Baruntse base camp for overnight camp.

Day 15: Trek to Panch Pokhari 5,480 m – 05 hrs.
From this isolated camp, morning starts to Panch Pokhari “five ponds” on the foot of Amphu Laptsa pass which is another pass to cross before Imjatse valley at Everest or Khumbu region. As the good walk progress walking on rocky moraines and then reaching a wide area at Upper Hongu Basin close to Kang Leyamura peak at 6,430 meters, and then following a rocky glacier towards a moraine area to reach the campsite beneath Amphu Labtsa pass at 5,780 meters.

Day 16: Rest day at Panch Pokhari.
A necessary rest day after several days of tough and strenuous walk and climb on rocks, ice and glaciers, this rest day allows you to regain your energy and strength back while our team of staff and guides will scout the next pass fixing ropes where necessary for the last crossing of this trip.

Day 17: Traverse Amphu Labtsa Pass 5,780 m on route Chhukung 4,900 m -07 hrs.
Starting early morning to cross our last high pass of the adventure with climb for an hour or more on rocks, moraine and icy slopes to reach the top of Amphu Labtsa offering stunning panorama of Lhotse South Face, Lhotse Shar and of Island / Imja-tse Peak, here a final inspection of the all the members, porters and staff in case of ill health and sickness due to altitude and tiredness which is common at this altitude. From here with rope fixed for safe descent to other side at Imjatse valley, descent of 150 meters on the gradual slopes below the pass. After a nice safe descent walk leads to an ablation valley of Imja glacier, on the Imjatse valley onto Khumbu / Everest area for overnight stop.

Day 18: Trek to Dingboche 4,360 m past Chhukung – 06 hrs.
After a hard and adventurous time for many days, today a pleasant walks to reach our first small human settlement at Chhukung for lunch.

From Chhukung after a pleasant break walk leads to the end of Imjatse valley and then reaching at Dingboche, at one time a temporary settlement for farmers and Yak herders, at present many houses have flourished serving as guest house and lodge to travelers on this beautiful valley.

Day 19: Trek to Thyangboche – 05 hrs.
Morning after a pleasant stop at Dingboche return journey on downhill and up to Thyangboche Monastery and back into green vegetation and tree lines.

From Dingboche continue walk with super views of Amadablam, Nuptse wall, Lhotse, and then heading downhill and back into lower altitude within tree lines, as the walk leads to a climb reaching our overnight stop at scenic Thyangboche Monastery.

 

A beautiful spot located on a small plateau surrounded by green forest and snow capped peaks with stunning views of Mt. Everest and majestic Ama-Dablam.

 

Here with enough time to visit its interesting monastery where you can observe young and elder monks and priest on prayer with the sound of religious chanting.

 

Day 20: Trek to Namche Bazaar 3,440 m – 05 hrs.
After a wonderful time in Thyangboche scenic and peaceful spot within serene alpine woodland walk towards Namche Bazaar on downhill trails with a short uphill to reach at Sanasa village, and then on easy wide path with views along the walks to reach at famous Namche Bazaar.

Here with enough time to explore the streets of Namche with many stores and shops, fresh bakery-restaurants, banks-post office, cyber café and even places with ATM.

Day 21: Trek to Lukla – 06 hrs.

From Namche Bazaar walk downhill to Dudh Kosi River banks to enter into Sagarmatha National Park, from here on exit of the park to reach at nice village of Monjo, and then crossing several times on the same river over suspension bridges, reaching at Phakding village.

 

From Phakding on easy good trail to reach Ghat and Choplong villiages, and then a last uphill of the adventure of less than an hour to reach at Lukla for overnight stop.

Lukla with unique airstrip operating daily flights Kathmandu-Lukla-Kathmandu in Lukla celebrate last night dinner after a successful adventure on Mt. Makalu & Sherpani Col Traverse.

 

Day 22: Fly to Kathmandu and transfer to hotel.
From Lukla flight starts from early morning to Kathmandu in fine clear weather, sometimes flight time can delay due to bad weather, as per the flight time board in a small plane for a super, scenic flight back to Kathmandu.

On reaching Katmandu domestic terminal our guide and staff transfer you back to respective hotels in the hub of Kathmandu in and around Thamel area.

Day 23: In Kathmandu for optional sightseeing tour.
A day reserved as spare and free day in case of flight delay at Lukla in due to bad weather conditions, with opportunity for sightseeing tour for few hours, after an interesting sightseeing back to hotel with afternoon free at leisure for individual activities.

Day 24: International departure for home ward bound.
After a great experience around high Khumbu and Mt. Makalu & Sherpani Col Traverse, depart from the hotel to the airport for final departure homeward bound or to respective destinations.
