Introduction:

Upper Mustang Trekking, an ultimate scenic and exotic destination within Far North West of Nepal Himalaya, once a Forbidden Kingdom till late 1980’s opened its door for outside travelers to witness its immense culture of bygone days.

Truly a most fascinating adventure to Upper Mustang Trekking and within its ancient walled Lo-Manthang the capital and a large village of Mustang district, although Jomsom is the headquarter and administrative town of Mustang areas.

On this interesting walk following the ancient Trans-Himalayan Salt and Caravan Route of Nepal / Tibet which is one of the highlight of the adventure of this wonderful journey on Upper Mustang Trekking.

Upper Mustang, actually an extension Tibetan south west vast plateau regarded as world’s highest and largest table-land, where few explorer and adventurer visited this areas in ancient times since then it was closed and been opened few past decades.

A great opportunity to be in one of the most picturesque country into complete wilderness with scenic high eroded cliffs and deep canyons with amazing colors of red-brown and grey where walk leads to interesting villages interweave with Buddhism religion and as well with ancient Bon sect practice of pre Buddhism.

Adventure begins from Jomsom after a scenic short flight from beautiful Pokhara city, heading into picturesque country as walk enters Chele-Tsusang and Tsarang villages encountering many prayer wheels and stone walls of great interest.

On walk explore its old monasteries of both ancient Bon and Buddhist religion and crossing few high passes with views of Dhaulagiri and Mustang Himal to enter into a walled former kingdom at Lo Manthang.

With time at Lo Manthang visiting its traditional and cultural villages includes a tour of old fort and place of former late Raja / King, including interesting monasteries and then heading towards back to Jomsom for scenic short flight to Pokhara.

Pokhara where our wonderful and remarkable Upper Mustang Trekking concludes with drive back to Kathmandu with fond memorable time on Nepal’s Far Wild West of Upper Mustang.

Brief Itinerary:

Day 01: Arrival at Kathmandu and transfer to hotel.
Day 02: In Kathmandu optional tour and preparation for Upper Mustang Trekking.
Day 03: Drive or fly to Pokhara 860 m- 06 hrs (30 mins scenic flight) and transfer to hotel.
Day 04: Morning flight to Jomsom 2,715 m and trek to Kagbeni – 04 hrs.
Day 05: Trek to Chele (Tsele) 3,050 m – 06 hrs.
Day 06: Trek to Geling 3,540 m – 05 hrs.
Day 07: Trek to Tsarang (Charang) 3,560 m – 06 hrs.
Day 08: Trek to Lo-Manthang 3,700 m – 05 hrs.
Day 09: In Lo-Manthang rest day for acclimatization and local visit.
Day 10: Trek to Ghami 3,440 m /11,286 ft – 06 hrs.
Day 11: Trek to Samar 3,150 m /10,335 ft -05 hrs.
Day 12: Trek to Kagbeni -05 hrs and transfer to lodge.
Day 13: Trek to Jomsom -04 hrs and transfer to lodge with free afternoon.
Day 14: Fly back to Pokhara and transfer to hotel by the Phewa Lake side.
Day 15: Drive or Fly back to Kathmandu -06 hrs and transfer to Hotels.
Day 16: Final International departure from Nepal.

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu and transfer to hotels.
On arrival at Kathmandu international airport, where you will be received with warm welcome and then transfer to your hotels in the hub of Kathmandu city, after checking in getting refreshed rendezvous with other climbing members and staff.

Here our guide or group leader will brief you with information regarding Upper Mustang Trekking, with welcome dinner in a nice Nepalese Restaurants includes Folk program of various parts of Nepal.

Day 02:                 In Kathmandu optional tour and preparation for Mustang Trek.

A free day in Kathmandu for trek where you can join in our sightseeing tour at places of great interest around Kathmandu-Patan and Bhaktapur cities, exploring culture and historical sites most of the monuments listed as World Heritage Sites.

Day 03: Drive to Pokhara 950m – 06 hrs journey distance 220 k.m.
Morning overland journey on the main busy highway of Nepal heading towards Mid West zone at Pokhara, drive leads through Himalayan foothills within warmer areas past many farm villages and town.

Finally this exciting drive reaching at Pokhara, then transfer to respective hotels by the beautiful and serene Phewa Lake with afternoon free for short walks.
(Options by Air 30 minutes scenic flight to Pokhara).

Day 04: Morning Flight to Jomsom 2,700 and trek to Kagbeni – 04 hrs.

With pleasant overnight at Pokhara transfer to Pokhara airport for a short flight to Jomsom, headquarter town of Mustang district.

 

From Jomsom our first day walk begins towards Kali-Gandaki river valley within windswept terrain, afternoon can be windy around this desert like area.

 

After 4 hours of good walks along with views of Mt. Dhaulagiri and Nilgiris reaching at Kagbeni village, the door to Upper Mustang around former forbidden Lo Manthang.

 

Day 05: Trek to Chele (Tshele) 3,050m – 06 hrs.

Morning wall leads on uphill through a canyon and then following a river upstream with amazing landscapes views of red cliff wall in both directions, and then slowly reaching few farm villages and cultivated lands of Tiri-Gaon village, overlooking impressive natural landscapes erosion of red colored cliff canyon and then few hours of good walk reaches to our overnight stop at Chele or Tshele village, a moderate size settlement.

 

Day 06: Trek to Geling 3,540 m – 05 hrs.

From Tsele, morning starts with to a climb towards Gyakar village, and from here trekking within arid and dry country and then reaching at Samar village, which is one of the pretty looking villages.

After Samar village with nice break here walking to a small place at Bhena from here walk leads to a steep climb to a ridge top called Yamda La at 3,860 meters pass this top offers striking views Mustang landscapes and of high mountains of Mt. Dhaulagiri range. After enjoying the scenery walking down-hill to overnight halt at Geling village via Syangboche village.

 

Day 07: Trek to Tsarang (Charang) 3,560 m – 06 hrs.

Morning before starting the walk to Tsarang “Charang” time permitting option visit to its old Geling monastery and observe the Buddhist mani prayer wheels propelled with water power, after the visit carry on trekking towards Ghami village, and then leading to cross Ghaymi Khola (stream) walk leads following lengthy and impressive line of Mani walls (holy prayer stone) from here walking to Dhakmar village, and then few hours of good trekking brings to Tsarang village surrounded by large fields of crops like buck wheat’s for overnight stop and visit of Tsarang old monastery.

 

Day 08: Trek to Lo-Manthang 3,700 m – 04 hrs.

Today a short day walk to one of our highlight of the trip at Lo Manthang, a classic walled large village, once a forbidden kingdom.

 

Starting morning walk on crossing a strong steel bridge, and then walk leads to Marang village, from this village uphill to reach a ridge top, encountering several chhorten and mani stones prayer walls in between Tsarang and Lo Manthang.

 

Walking with wonderful views of landscapes with Nilgiri’s, Tilicho and Bhrikuti peaks, walk gradual leads to ascend Lo La pass at 3,950 meters with first striking views of Lo Manthang walled village within a fortress, from here descend to the base of a pass then on pleasant trail towards Lo Manthang for two nights stops.

 

Day 09:                 In Lo-Manthang for acclimatization and local hike.

Lo Manthang the kingdom of Lo or Upper Mustang, here with one more day to explore village and its old Tibetan style houses within walled fortress.

 

In Lo Manthang visit to historical and cultural centre which is the main attraction of Lo-Manthang, with four main monasteries Namgyal Gompa, Champa Lakhang (God House), Red Thubchen Gompa, Chyodi Gompa and the great Entrance Hall.
Requesting permission to enter the king’s palace visit the interior of the old palace and meet the late king or Raja of Mustang family if possible.

 

Day 10: Trek to Ghami 3,440 m /11,286 ft – 06 hrs.
With exciting and enjoyable time in Lo-Manthang, depart from this mystical and legendry kingdom starting with descend and few short climb all the way to Ghami.

 

As the morning walk leads outside the walled Lo-Manthang village, our route leads to a steady climb to a pass offering last glimpse of Lo-Manthang, walk from here on is more or less on gradual with downhill slopes most of the way to Ghami village for overnight stop, Ghami another important village of Upper Mustang region.

 

Day 11: Trek to Samar 3,150 m /10,335 ft -05 hrs.
Trek today follows on same route towards Nyi La, climb to the ridge and then contouring upwards and then reaching the road coming from Tsarang.

From the top of the ridge a steep descend to Geling Valley. The trail continues bypassing Geling to a lone teahouse and then a gentle downhill to a small settlement of Tama Gung.

A steep switchbacks trail leads to a stream; the trail climbs to a large painted chhorten and then on straightforward route to our overnight stop at Samar.

Day 12: Trek to Kagbeni -05 hrs and transfer to lodge.
Our route from Samar leads on downhill trail on the same direction for few hour past Chele village to reach at Mustang Khola, from here walk leads on gradual path in between great canyons and eroded high cliffs to reach back at Kagbeni for last overnight within Upper Mustang.

Day 13:                 Drive to Jomsom 2,715 n – 02 hrs.
From Kagbeni, rest of the journey is easier (due to motorable road with few trekking path) taking a short last day walk of the adventure, as our trail descend to Kaligandaki river valley to reach at Jomsom for last overnight within high valley of Far Western Himalaya.

 

Jomsom headquarter town of Mustang region with a small airstrip above Kaligandaki River, an interesting country around Kaligandaki River valley within dry and arid country with incredible views of windblown hills and canyons.

 

Day 14:           Fly to Pokhara and transfer to hotel.
Morning walk to Jomsom airport for short scenic flight to reach at picturesque Pokhara valley, during air amazing views of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna Himalayan peaks, as the plane land at scenic Pokhara.

A popular and main touristic destinations of Nepal, overlooking massive Annapurna Mountains with serene Phewa Lake where our hotels located, afternoon free for individual activities and souvenir shopping or just relax and enjoy the views.

Day 15: Drive or fly back to Kathmandu and transfer to respective hotels.
Morning catching last views of Annapurna Himalaya with majestic Machhapuchare Himal or Fish Tail, and then an exciting overland journey to reach back into the hustle bustle city life of Kathmandu after a great experience and overwhelming time on Upper Mustang Trekking.

Day 16: International departure for home ward bound.
After a great and grand experience around high hill and mountains of Annapurna with great memories of incredible adventure on Upper Mustang Trekking, depart from the hotel to the airport for final departure homeward bound or to respective destinations.
